Peters entered her first treatment because of recurring nightmares. She worked with a more traditional American analyst who closely followed Peters while simultaneously remained distant in a professional but warm way. The work was deep and led to a discovery of Peter’s family’s secret past. Her second analysis focused more on a tumultuous and intense clinical relationship with her analyst allowing Peters to confront parts of herself and grow and develop in new ways from that of the first analysis. Two analyses. Two different styles. Each analysis with forty years of time between them. Peters changed. Analysis changed. To engage in this dynamic discussion, Joan Peters will be joined by Tom Rosbrow for a discussion of her history, her experience of being a patient in these two different analyses and her sense of discovery as she wrestles with her demons over time.

  2. Explain how the author’s relational understanding of the patient’s own lived experience, vulnerabilities, and developmental history affect the analyst’s understanding of the patient based on the analyst’s own theoretical orientation and lived experience.
