Bion’s Conception of Reverie and Winnicott’s Conception of Play Knitted Together Through Milner’s Contributions

Bruce Reis

Saturday Feb 21, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

In this insightful paper, Bruce Reis shows that Marion Milner’s work provides a foundation for the chief therapeutic contributions of Bion and Winnicott: reverie and play.

Through analysis of their shared conceptual terrain, this investigation reveals how Milner’s innovations served as a foundational bridge connecting these therapeutic approaches. This examination reveals reverie and play as overinclusive frameworks encompassing multiple therapeutic functions. Recognition of Milner’s foundational influence, when thought of as a bridge, offers a more complete understanding of these concepts’ development and suggests they might be understood as complementary rather than competing approaches to therapeutic change.
