2nd Friday Series
Join us as we explore the book A Greek Tragedy by Jeanne Carstensen. Carstensen’s gripping nonfiction account of the October 28, 2015, shipwreck off Lesvos—the deadliest single-day loss in the Aegean refugee crisis. This gathering will offer a space for reflective, nuanced dialogue—intertwining the personal, political, social and unconscious dimensions of Carstensen’s work. In this salon, we will examine the psychological undercurrents of exile, grief, displacement, and resilience. Carstensen’s narrative speak to collective social trauma and individual psychic survival. We will explore how activism, empathy, witnessing, and personal narrative play in the psychic integration of these catastrophic experiences. Drawing from psychoanalytic understanding we will unpack not only the content of the book but the emotional responses it evokes.
