Second Fridays – November

Negotiating Celebrity with The King, The Pope and The Princess

Annie Berman, Discussant Thomas Rosbrow, PhD

Friday Nov 8, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

flyerAnnie Berman explores the identification and passion in fandom in her film, The Faithful: The King, The Pope, The Princess. She engaged in a 10-year journey exploring memorabilia, memory, and legacy within the orbits of three key cultural icons: Pope John Paul II, Elvis Presley, and Diana, Princess of Wales. Berman started her quest when she discovered a lollipop officially licensed by the Vatican and then filmed her journey as she attended events whose focus was on these key cultural icons. What makes someone larger than life both reachable and unreachable at the same time? While we are continually confronted with new iterations of those that are “it,” our fascinations facilitate a bastion of identifying while trying to hide our feelings of emptiness and our fabricated selves. In this 2nd Friday we will watch clips of Berman’s film, and explore questions of how celebrity is constructed and what purpose it serves. Our journey will include the discussion of projection, cultural narcissism, and the power of identification. We will examine how we lose ourselves in fandom through the act of finding those whom we idealize and wonder what we gain and lose in this complex process.
