The Ethics of Hospitality in a Fragile World

Drawing from the work of three French philosopers—Emmanuel Levinas, Jacques Derrida, and Paul Ricoeur—Donna Orange will explore clinical hospitality. Ricoeur's concept of hospitable translation will be compared to psychoanalytic understanding and emotional availability. Special attention will be given to the ambiguity that develops from intended generosity and compassion. Finally, Orange will examine climate emergency and migration as new and ongoing challenges to ethical hospitality.

Course Objectives

After completing this course participants will be able to:

1. State how radical and conditional hospitality apply to climate emergency.
2. Explain the difference between the hermeneutics of suspicion and the hermeneutics of trust in clinical work.
