Creative Engagement in Psychoanalytic Practice

What does it mean to be creative as an analyst, to bring our alive, real self into the work? How do we find the inner emotional freedom to be creative, spontaneous, and improvisational, while also bounded by our relational, ethical intentions? How do we nourish our creativity outside the sessions? What are the therapeutic implications of bringing our creativity to clinical work? Henry Markman will discuss several subjects from his book, Creative Engagement in Psychoanalytic Practice (2021) including: being analytically authentic, holding ethical intentions, presence, embodied engagement and accompaniment, as well as the aesthetic experiences of our work. Dianne Elise will pose questions and explore these topics in conversation with Markman to bring out their clinical and therapeutic implications, as well as areas controversy.

After completing this course participants will be able to:

1. describe what it means to be creative as an analyst and how one might nourish analytic creativity outside the consulting room.
2. discuss the therapeutic implications of bringing creativity to one's clinical work.
