The Neuroscience of Long-term Memory Formation and Change: Clinical Applications

Dr. Alberini’s research focuses on the biological mechanisms underlying memory. She will describe the potential for traumatic memories to be weakened during the recall process.

Dr. Cristina Alberini’s research focuses on the biological mechanisms underlying memory. In her lecture, Dr. Alberini will discuss how long-term memories are formed and stored in the brain. She will describe the process of memory recall and how memories are “reconsolidated” when brought back to consciousness. She will explain how traumatic memories might be weakened during the reconsolidation process. Her lecture will be followed by a discussion and question period led by Dr. Maggie Zellner. The second half of the program will focus on the clinical implications of this research. We will begin with a discussion between Drs. Alberini and Zellner about the potential for the research on memory reconsolidation to impact clinical work. They will focus on a brief clinical vignette showing how memory reconsolidation in the clinical setting acts to reduce symptoms related to traumatic memory. Their discussion will be opened for questions and comments from the audience.
