flyerAs psychoanalytic psychotherapists, we engage in both theoretical and clinical theories and practices to understand and treat the human mind. But we have no common agreement as to what we mean by the “mind.” As Bion points out, this is because the mind and its contents—feelings and thoughts—are not discernible to the senses. The mind is a metaphysical reality that cannot be seen, heard or touched. And its foundation lies in the earlier capacity to experience and contain one’s primitive emotional life. Our minds become interchangeable with the idea of “self” or personality. We are left with interchangeable “states of mind” representing the many parts of our internal and external worlds. In this Series, we will study four separate “states of minds,” a fascistic state of mind, the unconscious social mind, a couple state of mind and Bion’s infinite mind. These divergent psychoanalytic perspectives will stretch our own states of mind and challenge thinking and application to our clinical practices.

CE Credits are included in this yearlong series (up to 37.5 credits).
