Patricia Gherovici, PhD
In 2019 Paul Preciado spoke to an international audience of 3,500 Lacanian psychoanalysts in Paris warning them that if there is a future for psychoanalysis it will be a process of depatriarchalization, deheterosexualization and decolonization as language, institution and clinical practice. This statement divided the audience—half booed him, half applauded vigorously. Preciado had wittily alluded to Kafka’s “Report to an Academy” and exhibited himself as a transsexual specimen like Kafka’s ape, claiming that he was as human as those in the audience. To push the metaphor further, Dr. Gherovici will invoke Kafka’s Metamorphosis and argue that psychoanalysis needs to undergo a metamorphosis, and the first sign could be a sex-change.
