Seeing Blind: Envisioning Ourselves and Others

How do we envision ourselves? Blind artists use perception, sensation, reflection, emotion, and unconscious processes to connect to their subject matter. As analysts we use similar processes to envision our patients and our selves. Between patients and analysts each has a unique vision of the other. What are the elements of this process, and how can we engage with one another using multiple senses? UC Berkeley English professor Georgina Kleege, in conversation with Annie Sweetnam, Ph.D., will draw from Kleege’s latest book, More Than Meets the Eye: What Blindness Brings to Art (2018) to engage in a group conversation about self-portraits created by blind artists.

After taking this course, participants will be able to:

1. List how blind artists use perception, sensation, reflection, emotion, and unconscious processes to connect to their subject matter.
2. Link experiences of blind artists to similar dynamics in the clinical hour.
