Dissociation and state transitions in everyday clinical work

Shifts in states of attention and embodiment, which are constantly at work in the clinical situation, take on particular relevance in the treatment of organized dissociative personalities. In these cases especially, the analyst’s active sensory engagement and ability to transition between states become important elements in the treatment situation.

Course Objectives

After completing this course participants will be able to:

  1. explain how dissociation is operative all the time
  2. discuss the significance of focusing on changes in state
  3. describe how the analyst might initiate contact (especially in the treatment of a range of dislocated patients)
