Neuropsychoanalysis – Dreams, Change, Reconsolidation

How Dreams May Be an Indicator of Psychotherapeutic Change and Memory Reconsolidation

Tamara Fischmann, Discussant Margaret R. Zellner

Saturday Mar 29, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The question of how dreams can be an indicator of psychotherapeutic change will be a focus of this lecture.

flyerDr. Fischmann will discuss her research group’s coding instrument, the Zurich Dream Process Coding System (ZDPCS), a valid and reliable system for analyzing manifest dreams. She will hypothesize that the transformation of dreams measured by the ZDPCS is the result of memory processes around unresolved conflictual/traumatic complexes, in an attempt to integrate them into one’s life narrative. The role of dreaming in the reconsolidation of traumatic memories will be explored. In the second section of the program, the clinical applications of Dr. Fischmann’s research will be considered. What are some indicators of integration and change in areas of conflictual/traumatic memories? Participants will be invited to discuss this, ask questions of Dr Fischmann, or offer clinical vignettes.
