Andy Warhol is both an artist and a cultural icon. Building on his background in advertising, Warhol created a unique body of work in which he played with color, light and repetition. His work captures both a sense of aloneness and simultaneously a sense of being part of a shared cultural experience. We will examine some of the tensions in Warhol’s life: intimacy and distance, fear, religion, AIDS, celebrity, gayness and personal isolation. We will also look at his work as he wrestled with the body and beauty, perfection, imperfection, repetition and longing. Examining Warhol the person and the multiplicity of his creative mediums (painting, film, interview, printmaking) we will look at the many facets of Warhol and delve into the complexities of his inner world and his work with art curator, Jessica Beck, an expert on Andy Warhol. She will be in discussion with Reyna Cowan.
