In this class, we will explore the neuroscience underlying the action of psychedelic medicines. We will outline the biochemistry of psychedelics in the brain, including the roles of neurotransmitters and their effects on structural plasticity. We will summarize neuroimaging results that inform current theories of psychedelic action and describe the subjective effects of psychedelics. Using case presentations, we will apply this neuroscientific understanding to show how psychedelics and psychoanalysis work synergistically together.
